Herkimer County Man taken into custody after hours-long standoff in town of Russia

State Police arrested Mathew E. Bienick, age 42 from 5111 Military Road Poland, NY for Criminal Possession of a Weapon 3rd degree (D felony), Menacing 2nd degree (A misdemeanor), Reckless Endangerment 2nd degree (A misdemeanor), Unlawful Imprisonment 2nd degree (A misdemeanor) and Harassment 2nd degree (violation).

On December 8, 2019, at approximately 6: 20 p.m., State Police in Herkimer responded to a 911 hang-up at 5111 Military Road in the town of Russia.  When troopers arrived, they met with a 36-year-old female who stated Bienick threatened to kill her and himself.  The victim said Bienick punched her in the nose during an argument.  She then reported another domestic incident that occurred a few weeks prior, when Bienick grabbed a rifle from a closet and put it in her mouth.  She stated Bienick did fire the gun inside a bedroom to get her attention.

Bienick refused to speak with Troopers and barricaded himself inside his residence.  State Police Crisis Negotiators and Special Operations Response Team (SORT) was then requested and responded to the scene.

On December 10, 2019, at approximately 12:00 A.M., Bienick surrendered himself to Troopers and was taken into custody without incident.  He was arraigned in the town of German Flatts Court and remanded to the Herkimer County Jail on $15,000 cash bail and is scheduled to appear back in the town of German Flatts Court on December 17th, at 3 p.m.
