Johnstown man charged in 2018 motor vehicle accident that lead to the death of a NYS Trooper


On July 31, 2020, State Police in Fonda, in consultation with the Montgomery County District Attorney Kelli P. McCoski, arrested 34-year-old Aaron M. Munise of Johnstown, for Criminally Negligent Homicide, a class E felony and Reckless Driving, a misdemeanor. The charges are the result of a sealed indictment passed up in Montgomery County Court.

Munise was arraigned in Montgomery County Court and remanded to Montgomery County Jail in lieu of $5,000 cash or $10,000 bond. On November 27, 2018, at approximately 7:45 a.m.,Trooper Jeremy VanNostrand was reporting to work at the State Police barracks in Fonda when he was involved in a motor vehicle crash. Trooper VanNostrand was stopped in the westbound lane of State Highway 5S waiting to turn into the station in his personal vehicle, when he was rear-ended by a box truck driven by Aaron M. Munise of Johnstown, and pushed into oncoming traffic. His vehicle was then hit by a pick-up truck traveling eastbound. Trooper VanNostrand was transported to Albany Medical Center where he succumbed to his injuries. He was posthumously promoted to the rank of sergeant.
