Utica Police are warning of a new identity and credit card theft scam circulating over the phone. Police say if you're called or texted by one of these scammers, you'll be told your credit or debit card has been locked, or something to the same effect, and you'll be asked to call a number to unlock it.
If you call the number, you will be asked for your full credit card number, the zip code, the 3-digit ID, and the expiration date. And automated voice will then tell you that your card has been unlocked. Scams like these have been around for ages, but that doesn't make them any less dangerous. If anything, scammers are getting more clever with their tactics.
If you're a victim of a scam like this, call Utica Police at 315-223-3510.
