State Police Warn Public Of Counterfeit Bills Circulating

Members of the New York State Police in Troop “C” have seen an influx of reports of counterfeit $100 bills in recent weeks.  Troopers have responded to several complaints in February, March and April.  Similar cases have been reported to other police agencies throughout the area. In February, troopers from SP Margaretville responded to reports on two different dates at businesses in Margaretville and Arkville where a woman used counterfeit $100 bills to make small purchases and received a large amount of real cash in return. In late March and April, troopers from SP Binghamton, SP Deposit and SP Marathon all responded to complaints of a male entering Dollar Generals in Union, Whitney Point and Marathon and the Family Dollar in Deposit and using several bogus $100 bills to purchase gift cards.  In some cases, store employees have noticed the bill was fake and refused to complete the purchase.  In other cases, the bank notified the store after the store’s deposit was received.  If you suspect counterfeit activity:

  • Do not put yourself in danger.

  • Contact local law enforcement

  • Try to get a good description of the suspect or try to get any information about the vehicle they’re operating and a license plate.
