Traffic Stop in Utica Nets Weapons Arrest



On February 20th, 2021 at approximately 10:10PM hours, members of the GIVE Strike Team conducted a vehicle stop of a Chrysler 200 sedan for NYS Vehicle and Traffic violations at the intersection of South St and King St.

During the course of the stop, cause was developed to conduct a search of vehicle and its occupants. During the search of the operator, Shakir Sanders age 22 of Utica, a Springfield handgun magazine containing live rounds was located within his sweatshirt. It was then learned that the associated handgun would be located under the passenger seat within the vehicle.

At that point both Sanders and the passenger Jesmonte Hawkins-Brown age 19 of Utica were taken into custody and brought to the Utica Police Department.

At the conclusion of the incident both parties were charged with:

Criminal Possession of a Weapon 2nd Criminal Possession of a Firearm

Sanders was issued traffic tickets for the NYSV&TL violations as well.

Since January 1st, 23 crime handguns have been removed from the city streets.
