Monday morning at around 12:10 am, Utica Police Officers were dispatched to 455 Elmhurst Road, Utica for a shots fired call. Upon the arrival of police officers located a male victim- Andrew Pruitt (age 33 of Utica) with a gunshot wound to his forehead. Pruitt is currently hospitalized, but conscious and expected to live. At the time of shooting Pruitt was at the home of a co-worker- Heather Mock (age 35) when Mock’s ex-fiancé- Christopher Conkling (age 38, Utica) walked into her home from a rear unsecured door. An argument ensued and Conkling shot Pruitt.
After the shooting Conkling then abducts Heather Mock and takes her to his home at 434 Van Rensselauer Road. Police located Christopher Conking’s vehicle parked in the driveway of his home. We established a perimeter, evacuated residents in the nearby area and established our mobile command center.Metro SWAT attempts several hours of communication with Conkling with no luck. A remote camera was placed inside the residence. Entry is made into the home and SWAT members locate both Christopher Conkling and Heather Mock, who were deceased.It appears that Mock was the victim of a murder/suicide. Andrew Pruitt, Heather Mock and Christopher Conkling are all current employees of New York State Department of Corrections.Our crime scene unit is currently processing two separate crime scenes at this time.We want to thank the New Hartford Police Department, Oneida County Sheriff’s Office and the New York State Police for there assistance this morning.On behalf of the Utica Police Department, our heartfelt prayers and condolences go out to the family members of Heather Mock. Mock leaves behind two children, who are safe and accounted for. Additionally we send our best wishes to Andrew Pruitt and hope for his speedy recovery.
