Utica Police Officer Injured Responding To Fight

On October 12th, 2019 at approximately 11:55 p.m., officers with the Tactical Unit noticed a physical altercation occurring on Varick Street near Hamilton Street. As they approached to attempt to break up the fight one of the individuals involved, Tyreese Lewis age 28 of Utica, noticed the officers coming and approached one of them.

When Lewis came into proximity to the officer, he raised his fist and punched the officer once in the face. At that point the officer advised him that he was under arrest and attempted to take him into custody. Lewis began to actively resist his arrest and ultimately had to be taken to the ground where he continued to resist by fighting with several officers who had begun to assist.

After a continued struggle for several moments Lewis was ultimately taken into custody and brought to the Utica Police Department for processing.

Along with being struck in the face, the initial arresting officer also suffered knee and ankle injuries in the struggle with Lewis. This officer was taken to St Elizabeth's Hospital for medical treatment and has been placed out of work for several days.
